Hat Tricks and crazy goals
"All those bounces that didn't go in last night, we got tonight," said Americans coach Jim Hiller, speaking of Friday's 1-0 loss to Seattle in which they took 57 shots. "Part of our plan is to be disciplined and win the special teams battle, and we did that."Justin had a great game (a hat trick? yes please!). They all did, it was just a great game. Didn't get as bananas as games against Spokane sometimes do. AMS dominated play led by Feser's line.
Justin Feser had a career night with a hat trick and an assist, and Drew Owsley finished with 26 saves as Tri-City improved to 3-0 at home and 3-2-0-0 overall.
"I just go out and play and see the results later," said Feser, who had one assist before the game. "(Brett) Plouffe and (Brooks) Macek were putting the puck on net and I was getting lucky."
The most bananas part was the fluky goal by Toll on the penalty kill. It was a routine clearing pass, aimed at the Chiefs net, of course, and it went it. Reid was either asleep in the crease or just didn't think it'd get there, I don't know. Obviously it must've taken a weird bounce that I just didn't see. I don't care, I'll take it.
Tri-City took control with a three-goal second period, punctuated by a 160-foot, short-handed clearing shot by Jarrett Toll that caught Reid by surprise and slid into the net to give the Americans a 5-2 lead at 16:16.AMS still have bloated roster (WHY WASN'T PROKOP PLAYING?!?) but thankfully, even with so many guys being moved around from game to game, they were communicating well and clicking on all cylinders. With the lead, Coach was able to roll all four lines, giving the kids (Olstad, Castro, and Holland) some good ice time.
"It wasn't even trying to put it on net," Toll said. "It bounced and somehow went in."
We've decided Mason Wilgosh shouldn't have a number on his jersey because you can't put a number on awesome. He's everywhere, getting gritty, nifty, all the words associated with being spectacular. Adam Hughesman had another great night as well. This is the Adam Hughesman I've been waiting for for the last couple seasons. Also everywhere being pesky was Shinnimin. Love it.
I was glad to see Jordan Messier get more ice time, seems he didn't have as much as I though he would in earlier games. Brooks Macek also had a stellar game.
Really, not a lot to pick apart about last night's game. I'm sure if I really thought about it, I could find something, but why? It was a great game. Let's go with that.
Oh and that Drew Owsley? Hell to the yes. He kept looking over, waiting to see if we had the "I believe in Drew Owsley" sign, we did not. Must make a new one before next home game (in TWO FREAKING WEEKS!! TOO FAR AWAY!!). I was once again also super impressed with Drydn Dow. This kid is good.
Ok, I suppose if I were to find any criticism, it would be the nervousness felt with McIntosh and Werbowski paired defensively. Riley was less sucktastic last night, but still. Lane's good, but not always good enough (yet) to pick up the slack if Riley fails. Just worries me. But with Tyler Schmidt out (charley horse apparently?) I didn't necessarily mind Riley's experience out there against Spokane.

I'm really happy seeing the ice time spread out more evenly than it has been the last few years. You can see the younger kids gaining more confidence and good things are coming from it. I'm not sure if that's just Hiller's style or if it's happening because this is a new crop of kids to him and so they are all sort of on equal footing.
Yea, McIntosh and Werbs up against Wahl, Beach and Koper (I think?) was making me veeery uncomfortable. They did alright, seemed to have some trouble clearing the zone at times. McIntosh was far less sucky than he has been. He has started playing like he did in the playoffs last year. Maybe he knows he's on the chopping block? I get the feeling that those two are both being showcased.
I love the way Suds is playing too. And that Drydn Dow, you're right, he's something special. He wasn't flawless last night, but I never felt nervous when he was on the ice.
Not gonna lie, while I loved Snack, the high risk/high reward system he was using the last couple of years was giving me heart attacks that I don't miss.
It seems like there is some strong chemistry with this group. I can't explain in words how proud I am and how much fun I am having watching the team click. I love their grit, determination, never-say-die attitude and their overall balance.
Or... this could just be the pain meds talking.
P.S. Beach is already showing his true colors. Some of the poor wittle Spokane fans are going to end up eating their words.
amen, spokant!
i was pretty stoked for riley last night, not gonna lie. no shittastic screwups, and you're right- i think he knows his head's on the chopping block right now. he just needs to get his shit together and play some HOCKEY. he can do it, but something's not clicking for him (for whatever reasons).
i was nervous going into this season: new coach, new faces, etc. but i'm super impressed with everything right now. of course, there are mistakes to be made and whatnot, but it's mothereffin' junior hockey, so whatever. we've got the talent and the chemistry. everyone seems to be doing their job ("DO YER JOB!" hahaha) and they aren't relying on just one line, one goalie, etc (i.e. being spoiled with price and pickard). like you said, we're gritty, determinated, and balanced, and i love it. and whatever hiller brought to the organization is working. i'm super stoked for him as well.
and don't get me started on that drew owsley fella! he's doing so well! and that hughesman fella! and that shinnimin kid! and that drydn dow stud!
okay, i think you get my point.
go ams!
"Spokant" I don't know which Chiefs fans you are talking about but everyone I heard talking about it specifically said they'd give Beach a chance as long as he didn't act like an ass-hat. And on THAT note: he only had 4 PIMs last night and when he did start acting up (please note I'm not denying he wasn't) Sauter sent him to the locker room. Soooo...hold your tongue child.
This is totally true, Beach started acting up and sauter benched him which is exactly what he should have done. But one thing i do love is how all these tri fans talk about how horrible our fans our when you guys have the fans who come up and get in our faces when nothing was even said on our part about how our players. Great respectful fans you got there. Oh and those flamer shirts that the ice shovelers have are beyond fucking lame.

"all these tri fans"
don't lump us all together, just I don't lump all Spokane fans together.
There's fans on both sides that ruin it for everyone.
There's fans on both sides that make me wish these two teams never ever had to play each other ever again.
Yes, the flame jerseys on the ice shovelers are ridiculous.
ok im sorry for lumping you together but every single person I encountered was beyond rude to me. maybe my experience will be better next time and i wont get harassed
Sorry but those posts are ridiculous. You have the gull to come on here talking about ALL AMS FANS and you sign your post Ryan "The fucking man" Letts #1 Fan - yep boy is that classy. I only saw 4 Spokane fans last night at the game (can't say too many of you made it down) and I AN AMS FAN told them thanks for making it to Tri and drive safely home. SO DON'T lump us all together! Kinda like two years ago during the 7 game playoffs and I was in your barn and saw about 5 grown older men give our healthy scratch boys walking around the concourse death threats. It happens in BOTH barns it is how it is - ignorance is everywhere.
Hey, "Anonymous", if you want to have an adult conversation, act like an adult. Don't call me Child. I happen to be a grown up WITH a child of my own. I said SOME of the fans will be eating their words and the fans I was referring to are on the message boards and another person in particular who writes a blog about the Chiefs.
I will not hold my tongue as this is a country where I am allowed free speech and I certainly will not hold it just because you, "Anonymous", tell me to. I am entitled to my opinion just as much as you are entitled to yours. I don't feel I was disrespectful or crossed any lines. At least, no more than those who still wave the Ryan Letts banner every chance they get.
And to the person who wants to talk about rude fans? Yea, the last and final time we went to Spokane was the game when Letts ran Chet. You want to know what the fans there told us? That Pickard deserved it and what was on the score board didn't matter. Granted, these were just a handful, but there are rude fans everywhere. Maybe the reason Tri fans were rude to you is because you people won't show any gd respect for our national anthem. If you want to desecrate it, save it for your own barn.
ok, hello, I can only be "anonymous" because open ID's are blocked, if you think im scared to put my shit up please. ill tell you exactly where i sit. Ryan is the fucking man letts and yes he hit pickard which i dont condone and pickard was one of my fav goalies. get the fuck over it, it happened beyond to long ago. in case you don't remember ill say it again... Asuchak ran tokarski. look it up, its on youtube approximately 1 month before letts did it. Ok, you were probably one of the only people said something nice to some chief fans bat as a young girl coming in and grown men harassing her left and right it isn't quite to fun.
oh and we are damn right able to say whatever the hell we want during the national anthem where we want to. Ugh would that be free speech again..hmmm i think so.
And you want to talk about fans saying shit, you should have heard some of the stuff said about james reid and not surprisingly kyle beach."spokKANE" Oh, and i know exactly what post and who your talking about who said all this stuff about beach. i believe every single comment i read were going in with an open mind and after what they had seen were HAPPY WITH IT SOOO FAR!
oh, damn wheres my letts banner. must have misplaced it but ill be sure to have it by the next tri-shitty game. :)
Anonymous was chosen because the openID doesn't work....wonder why??? Lets all pop out babies so we can be as mature as one another. I said nothing about Letts, but since ya brought it up- he's a good player, Pickard's a good player, they are both still playing and pretty sure they're over it. I was at that damn game and never opened my mouth during the national anthem, even though I do not believe "home of the Chiefs" is disrespectful. Sports teams have done it all across the States for fucking years.
aaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnndddd this is what I meant when I said I never wanted these teams to play each other ever again.
I'm in a shitty mood today so don't push me, I'll block all of you.
and OpenID is allowed, I'm staring at the option right now.
Stare at it all you want, it doesn't work.
On a positive note, it looked like Sauter was trying to put an end to Beach's antics after that 2nd penalty so atleast he's trying. If Beach keeps going back to his dirty ways and coach benches him each time he does it, eventually he'll learn. Maybe.
Mikaela- Totally agree. I'm actually hoping Sauter will make him sit out a game or two when he acts up.
Holy shitty fans, Batman! I thought this kind of smack only came from Buffalo Sabres fans. Do Ams games feature asshat fans from the "anonymous" camp the break your car flags off and throw things?
Ryan "The fucking man" Letts #1 Fan: Ever heard of punctuation? Appropriate capitalization? Spell check? You cannot even hope to be taken seriously writing that poorly. Secondly, it may be your right, free speech, etc. but it doesn't change the fact that it is totally classless and lacks respect to violate the National Anthem. Stand, remove hat, hand over heart, veterans salute … those actions indicate a moment of solidarity and reverence. The fact that anyone from anywhere in our country would defy it is positively appalling. There is simply no good excuse for it. If you don’t like what is being written here, go away. Find a Chiefs blog or someplace else share your eloquent enlightenment.
Anonymous: Child? Pop out babies? For real? What purpose does it serve write something so irrelevant, uninformed and disrespectful? Is name-calling really necessary? Finally, just because something has been done for years doesn't make it any less disrespectful. As I said before, shouting out things during the National Anthem is inappropriate. Period.
now i'm going to quit reading your comments. it's just as terrible as reading the message board.
@janeybell--welcome to the AMS/Chiefs rivalry from hell. Fuck this noise. Srsly.
@Cleo--I agree. I've worked with veterans and I think they would agree too.
@normalooking--THIS.
Did anyone notice that Fowlers'latest article is on Beach. I guess the AMS don't have anyone worth writing about.
I think the D is playing well overall. Riley did have a good game and not sure if they are showcasing him or not but I dont see Bob trading werbs with the best +/- on the team right now. I think we will see one of the older D going in a package deal.
thank you last Anonymous for getting back to talking hockey. Much appreciated ;)
Cleo did you not read Spokant's comments? Or are you just choosing to ignore the faults of your fellow commenters like you do for your players?
@Anonymous re: Fowler: You are right, she loves Kyle Beach and that's great for her. That is why we come here to this blog, where it's based solely on the AMS and their great talent. Apparently the AMS do have something great about them or else YOU wouldn't be here causing trouble. Now go run along to your Chiefs blog, board or whatever makes you happy and quit ruining this one.
Mikaela
I think you got me wrong I am the anonymous that made the comment about Fowler. I am not a Spoke fan but Ams fan and get ticked that she can't write about our boys. I am sorry I didn't mean to stir pot further. It was never meant as a compliment to Beach but rather a question as to why the Ams reporter doesn't report on the AMS. Please don't get pissed at spoke fan for my comment.
Sorry, your last sentence made it seem as though you were a spoke fan. Anyway- she doesnt write about the AMS, in fact her last two posts have been about Kyle Beach and it's rather embarrassing. If I could, I'd vote for "Dave Schultz" to get her job! :)
MIkaela
No problem - I see your point. That is one thing I like about this blog - people acknowledge mistakes, miscommuications etc Pretty civilized compared to others and for a bunch of rowdy chicks lol!!!
"I think we will see one of the older D going in a package deal."
I've been afraid that would happen, though I think a younger kid (like Werbs) might hold more value since he has longer to play in the Dub. I'm too much of a girl. I'm emotionally attached and I don't want any of them to go! :)
My guess is that at least one and probably two of; McIntosh, Sutherland, Werbs and Humphries will be moved or reassigned. Or Plouffe but only if its to get another 20. And in fairness, Riley has really stepped it up and Sutherland has looked good too. I'll be sad to see anyone go (mostly) but if it makes us better, then great.
Sittin' in PP!
Cleo- i really don't have the time to spend all day on here like you and spell check every word i write. Yes i know how to spell and use punctuation. I got to Gonzaga and I believe that it is probably a requirment to get in...hmmm maybe. but thanks for spending a good amount of your time checking on my spelling, punctuation and grammer. damn i wish i was good as you!
Mikaela- thats exactly what i hope sauter will do. if he acts up again, sit him out a game. we won'(thats for you cleo)t put up with that in spokane and Beach will be forced to control his temper.
