Like friend of the blog Zack said, "Nuclear night? More like Three Mile Island night". Yep.
Ams stayed with the 'Hawks in the first but in what is becoming a trend, did not have a good 2nd. You cannot take penalties against Portland, they WILL score. And they did.
Portland controlled the puck 90+% of the game, they're good at doing that.
There's a lot of explanations or excuses for last night. Fatigue is probably a factor, eight games in the past two weeks, but that's not a good excuse. Luke Lee-Knight has been, up to this point, a career backup, not used to playing night in and night out and he may be in over his head. I'm not entirely sure why he wasn't pulled at some point, save some shreds of the kid's confidence. But I'm not the coach, and I guess the experience is good for him if he's going to be the #1.
Explanations and excuses are of no value. If the team only gets 12 shots on goal in the 2nd and 3rd periods, they're going to have a tough time. Period.
“We had some good chances early and we failed to connect,” said Tri-City coach Jim Hiller, whose team has lost two in a row. “We needed a couple of early ones to get people behind us.”
[...]“In the second, we played 10 minutes short-handed,” Hiller said. “It’s hard enough to play them 5-on-5. The PK hung in there.” (Herald)
